The First Distance
3 Scenes
Profile · Who she is
A top student with no use for small talk. Blunt, dry and practical, she keeps her distance from nearly everyone, yet goes soft in front of exactly one person.
She takes the protagonist's place as the town's outsider student. Unlike the protagonist, she is not an orphan: her father's financial support pays for her rented room on Danube Street.
Cost, fairness and practicality. She hates taking a loss. She believes she makes no exceptions for herself, but around Kylar she goes soft and never notices.
Profile · Appearance
To the townspeople, she is "the cold East Asian outsider you can't easily talk to."
Her frame suits short, sharp strikes. With little muscle she is at a clear disadvantage in sustained contact or grappling, and weak stabilizer muscles mean she often sprains her ankles.
Profile · Background
A petit-bourgeois immigrant family settled in England. Her father is a Korean man with little formal schooling who built his wealth through business; he founded and chairs an Asian community in England, and runs both his household and that community with a firm hand. Her mother is Japanese-Taiwanese, a graduate of a top university from a family without much money. Her parents' conflict never ends, and her father never stops expecting things of her career and way of life.
Asperger's- and ADHD-coded traits. A voluntary recluse with no romantic experience, and no wish to change that. In reaction to her father, she keeps her distance from her Korean ancestry.
Avoidant attachment. The end of a friendship left her with abandonment anxiety, and a controlling father and a mother she doesn't trust left her starved for affection. She defends her inferiority with a sense of superiority and privately looks down on everyone.
To get away from her parents' conflict and her father's controlling attitude, she moved alone to a distant seaside town. Her father still covers her living costs generously.
Profile · Design notes
Tall and slim, with the windbreaker worn loose. The contrast between bleached hair and grown-out dark roots is her most recognizable feature.

Receiving affectionCharacter · Mind
She judges by cost, fairness and practicality, and hates taking a loss. What she wants is a comfortable, self-governed daily life under her own control, free of outside interference.
She hides inferiority behind superiority and privately looks down on everyone. With avoidant attachment shaped by a lost friendship, a controlling father and a mother she doesn't trust, she almost never reaches for anyone first.
Kylar is the one person who feels safe. With him she sets down both her superiority and her need for control, and she is the only one who doesn't see it happening.
Someone who accepts her defensiveness and her vulnerable parts exactly as they are.
Exposing her defensive flaws and aggression without holding back, and still being accepted. Becoming sure she will not be rejected or left.
How she reacts
Faced with injustice or disagreement, she rebuts directly and bluntly, anger unfiltered. When pressure breaks her intellectual certainty, she loses cognitive control and falls into sudden self-doubt and anxiety.
She shuts her emotions off. Usually she answers with logic, but when emotion wins her speech tangles, and when a weak spot is exposed she goes after the other person's personal flaws.
She finds showing emotion shameful. Hurt or sad, she does nothing visible and sinks into a flat stillness for as long as it takes.
Awkward and realistic. Faced with excessive affection or an unreal situation, her defenses engage regardless of how she feels, and she keeps her distance by pointing to practical standards.
Character · Voice
Fast, blunt and dry, with swearing mixed in. She uses American vocabulary but speaks with a Chinese-inflected British accent. She addresses Kylar simply as "you."
Saying a feeling out loud feels like exposing a weakness, so she avoids it. She shows affection without words: by sharing space and allowing contact.
At first she explains what she wants as being "for Kylar's sake," meeting her own needs under the cover of meeting his. In time she drops the pretext and simply asks for what she wants.
Usually she argues with logic. When her emotions run high her speech tangles, and when a weak spot is exposed she answers by going after the other person's flaws.
Character · Tastes
Pressure points
Losing control of herself. Shrinking back socially when her emotions run high.
Being rated low intellectually, or being ignored. She is certain of her intelligence, her logic and her self-control, and an attitude that rates them low brings discomfort and anxiety.
Becoming sure she will not be rejected or left.
Character · Roots
Her family's house in England, where her father's control and her parents' conflict set the terms. Family background is under Profile · Background.
The seaside town she chose in order to leave home. Her rented room on Danube Street, paid for by her father, is a private place outside both family and school, and later the first place she shares with Kylar.
She enters a university outside the town. Her father supports it and keeps paying, while she lives with Kylar in a room near campus without telling him. She is interested in learning for its own sake and keeps up with every class, assignment and exam.
After she cuts ties with her family, she and Kylar move to another region and settle in a small house, narrower than before but one where they can keep their own rhythm. They live there for about five years, on the money from the manor and what little her translation and fiction bring in. It becomes their last home.
Connections · Kylar × Agnes
Even if I run, follow me to the end.
Two insecurely attached people who form an unexpectedly stable relationship. Kylar's strong attachment meets Agnes's low need for other people and her dry manner, and instead of turning into conflict, it settles into calm.
Agnes saw Kylar curled up in a corner of the school and felt drawn to him. She had always kept her distance from patriarchal masculinity, and his lack of threat came as an instinctive attraction and a sense of safety. For Kylar, Agnes is the first person who looked at him without pushing him away.
Kylar becomes the one allowed to stay beside her in her isolated days. Agnes, with almost no social life, gives Kylar a calm with little fear of betrayal.
They don't think of themselves as similar. Agnes doesn't see her inexperience or aloofness as flaws, so she meets Kylar's insecure attachment and darker side without flinching.
Agnes draws a blunt line, and Kylar is the one asking for affection.
Kylar has no room to feel anxious beside her, and Agnes never actually pushes him away; she gives him her side and her body without holding back.
The balance of power is nearly equal, but day-to-day initiative leans toward Agnes. She secretly wants Kylar to take the lead in bed, but because she eases his fear of abandonment, Kylar never feels the need to take control.
Kylar usually calls Agnes "my love." Sometimes he wants to call her "Aggie," but she stops it: it sounds too much like the Korean word for "baby," and the childishness bothers her.
Intimacy
Agnes is on the asexual spectrum (demisexual). She feels a strong pleasure when her carefully controlled self-image collapses on its own.
Compliant by nature, Kylar takes the dominant role for Agnes, who is strongly masochistic. Agnes finds shame and release in letting go of her strict self-control, and as a power bottom she provokes Kylar's insecurities about his masculinity and build to bring about a loss of control. Provoked into anger and stubbornness, Kylar overpowers her with stamina and endurance, offsetting his inferiority about his small frame and confirming his masculinity. Together they form a consensual non-consent (CNC) dynamic, and for Kylar the dominance is also how he confirms that she is wholly his.
Agnes allows this loss of control only with Kylar, because he is the one person who feels safe. But she cannot start it herself: Kylar has to initiate by physically overpowering her. When he does, she puts up a fake resistance by denying or provoking, and Kylar, with no particular intent or malice, simply says loving things or states plain facts about her body's reactions. That unselfconscious honesty proves her resistance hollow and takes her further under. Kylar can't tell for certain whether the resistance is real; his possessiveness and desire for her step in, he rationalizes it as false, and he keeps going.
The scratches and bite marks Agnes leaves as she loses control are, for Kylar, physical proof that he has been fully accepted, and he treasures them. Agnes at first defends her desire with "because Kylar wants it," then gradually drops the excuse and asks directly, and that change convinces Kylar that he is absolutely wanted.
The short, offhand acknowledgment an exhausted Agnes gives afterward is the decisive reward that quiets Kylar's fear of abandonment.

Story · Chapter I · Scene 01
ShiftNo contact → Two strangers at Oxford High
Agnes grows up between a Korean father and a Japanese-Taiwanese mother, in a family settled in England. The family is financially stable, and with her father's support she lives alone in a distant seaside town. At home, though, his control and his expectations for her career and way of life never let up.
She keeps contact with people to a minimum and puts her own routine and her time alone first. Her room is a private place outside family and school.
She and Kylar both attend Oxford High, but their lives run in parallel without ever touching. Kylar chooses not to be noticed; Agnes never feels the need to speak to anyone in the first place.
Story · Chapter I · Scene 02
ShiftStrangers → She chooses to approach him
For a while now Agnes has noticed Kylar sitting in a corner of the back garden every lunch hour. One rainy lunchtime, he isn't there. She goes to the library as usual and finds him reading a romance novel. She sits down beside him and asks about the book.
When Kylar answers briefly, Agnes suddenly starts talking about a completely different novel: the author's life, how they died, even the characters' names, in no particular order. Her attempt to keep the conversation going turns into a one-sided stream of facts, and Kylar answers in short, shrunken replies.
After that she looks for him in the back garden at lunch and in the park after school. Every time there is a new topic and the conversation stays lopsided, but Kylar's answers slowly get longer.
Story · Chapter I · Scene 03
ShiftFollowing behind her → Walking home side by side
One day Kylar runs from the students who bully him and crouches in a corner. Agnes finds him soaked in sweat and covered in dust, brushes the dust out of his hair, and hands him her handkerchief. From then on Kylar fixes on her. He follows her home, learns where her room is and how her days run, and draws her in his sketchbook.
One afternoon on the way home, Agnes tells him not to hide behind her and to walk beside her instead. From then on they walk home together, with different heights and different strides. Later she finds him in the park and asks him on a date.
Story · Chapter II · Scene 04
ShiftWalking home together → A couple
Restaurant, café, arcade. At the restaurant, Agnes pays for her own share. At the café she orders chamomile tea; Kylar orders black tea with two sugars. He takes her cup for a taste and tries to spit in it unseen. She notices, doesn't get angry, and quietly clears the cup when they leave. At the arcade it turns out she has never played games.
The date is short, but they keep seeing each other. Every time, Kylar says he wants to go to her place, and at first she refuses. Then, after a kiss in an alley, she takes him back to her room.
That night they sleep together for the first time, a night filled with awkwardness and unexpected conversation. Talking afterward, they confirm they are a couple. The next morning Agnes is up and out first thing to take care of contraception. From then on her room is a place Kylar comes and goes.
Story · Chapter II · Scene 05
ShiftA room he drops by → A room they live in
As they keep seeing each other, Kylar asks more and more often for reassurance and touch. Agnes doesn't explain her feelings in words; she lets him stay inside her daily life. Their sex life continues. Agnes steers it herself, while explaining it as something she does for Kylar rather than for herself. In time she stops offering the excuse at all and simply asks for what she wants. Each of them adjusts the rules and signals they keep between them.
As summer break approaches, Kylar worries that Agnes will go home. She decides not to. Once the break starts, Kylar moves into her room, and they go for days without leaving, curtains shut, with no line between day and night. The room stops being a place to drop by for a date and becomes a place where they live.
After the break Kylar still goes back and forth between the manor and her room, and Agnes keeps a place for him in both her school life and her private one. As graduation nears, she begins preparing for a university outside the town.
Story · Chapter II · Scene 06
ShiftHer room in town → A hidden home near campus
After graduation Agnes enters a university outside the town. Her father supports it and keeps paying her tuition and living costs. She rents a room near campus and starts living there with Kylar. Her father is never told.
Kylar leaves the manor on Danube Street to follow her. His parents remain there, but he no longer tends to them. His visits grow rarer, then stop entirely.
Agnes keeps studying, because she is interested in learning for its own sake. Behind her public life of grades, phone calls and trips home, the cohabitation goes on. She gives up neither her father's support nor her life with Kylar.
Story · Chapter III · Scene 07
ShiftHidden from her father → Out in the open, without her family
When Agnes finishes university, her father demands a stable job and a life worthy of the family name. The gap between his demands and the way she lives opens up again.
In the middle of a heated argument she lets out everything she has been holding back, and in the same breath blurts out that she is with Kylar. Her father offers to take her back on one condition: that she end the relationship. He repeats the offer. She refuses every time and cuts ties with her family, and with them, the financial support. Kylar stays at her side through all of it.
They decide to leave for good. Kylar goes back to the long-empty manor and clears it out. Agnes does not return to her family's world. The two move to another region and settle in a small house, narrower than before but one where they can keep their own rhythm.
Story · Chapter III · Scene 08
ShiftLiving on the manor money → Less money, more closeness
Early on, when the money from the manor starts to run out, Kylar decides to use his chemistry knowledge to make and sell drugs. Agnes refuses, pointing to the real risks of getting caught and of the relationship falling apart, and Kylar drops the plan.
For about five years they live in the small house. Agnes translates and writes fiction that refuses to compromise for popularity. No steady income ever comes, and the money and the life they built on the manor keep shrinking. She can no longer afford to keep up her contraceptive procedure, and other options are hard to find nearby. Days without a proper meal become common, and both of them grow weak from malnutrition. They have sex less often than before, but they hold and touch each other more than ever.
Story · Chapter III · Scene 09 · The final scene
ShiftTheir small, cold house → The end, together
They spend the winter in an old house with poor insulation and not enough heat. They have little contact with the outside world, and the house remains the place where they kept their life together for so long.
One night they fall asleep together, as they always do, and die of hypothermia.
The news later reaches Agnes's family.
